What’s Up This Week? #AVI3O #ENG1D #NBV3E

Hello, everyone! It’s a short week due to a Professional Development Day on Friday, April 24. That means four days of gettin’ stuff done. It also means that the departure date of the GCHS Iceland Travel Group is fast-approaching. I wish I was going, too! I’m not – so instead, here I am with an update for classes this week:

AVI3O Grade 11 Art: The first batch of clay sculptures went in the kiln for their first firing today. Fingers are crossed that we avoid any explosions and the pieces come out intact so that they can be glazed. In the meantime, students are experimenting with wire sculptures. One student immediately took to the wire and crafted this little fella in a matter of a few minutes. He’s a natural:
wiredude

The best part is that students began to collaborate and are in the process of sculpting “accessories” for the Wire Dude. Looking forward to seeing what happens!

ENG1D Grade 9 English: We started poetry today with…the excitement of some background information. Tomorrow we will begin discussing how to analyze poetry looking for meaning, poetic devices, and all that good stuff. That will be followed with an assignment where students start looking at song lyrics.

The literary essay for The Chrysalids is due soon. The rough copy, (which I will look over for clarity, but not necessarily for spelling/grammar), is due on Wednesday.

NBV3E Grade 11 Aboriginal Beliefs & Values: This week, we will finally begin Tomson Highway’s play “The Rez Sisters”. This play is powerful: it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s touching, it’s bitter. It uses rez life to help us figure out who we are and where we come from. I always look forward to reading it and I have very high hopes for this semester’s group.

Midterm report cards should be in the mail in a few days. If you have questions about student progress or any class information, let me know! Otherwise, take ‘er easy!
