October 6-10 in #ENG3U #ALC1O #ENG2P

Hi Everyone. Thanksgiving weekend is right around the corner – so are the first progress reports of the semester. There are a number of students who are missing multiple assignments so it is absolutely important that students take the time to get caught up. Mr. Wilson is available Tuesday and Thursday this week at 12:05pm to answer questions for outstanding work. In the meantime, here’s what’s happening this week:

ENG3U – Grade 11 English
Students will continue studying Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein this week, focusing on the Creature’s sections in the novel – Chapters 11-16 and 17-20. Students will be doing some writing, as well. All students will have completed the first unit quiz by Monday. A mark update will be provided this week, too.

ALC1O – Grade 9 Art
There are several people falling behind in this class. Students should be at the beginning stages of their final perspective assignment, which will be the focus of the week. Depending on time, we may have a day or two to pull out and prepare clay for our next unit, which will focus on sculpture techniques.

ENG2P – Grade 10 English
Several students are falling behind in this course. Please see me for missing work lists. I will provide students with a mark update this week in advance of the first Progress Report. Students will write a Short Story quiz this week and then move into the introductory stages of our novel study, which is on Lord of the Flies. Here’s hoping students enjoy it!

I will be away this Friday, October 10. If you have any questions about a student’s progress, missing assignments, or other course-related information, please email me! Have a wonderful week.

Hello, October… #ENG3U #ALC1O #ENG2P

So it’s October already. Craziness. Time is flying by and Fall is flying in, too. Things are starting to get busy in classes. It’s important for students to keep caught up. As always, if there are any questions about a student’s progress, I can be reached at GCHS or through e-mail.

Here’s what’s happening in class this week…

indexENG3U Grade 11 English students are into the first chunk of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The unit involves a study of Romantic and Gothic literature, themes, and character. There is an abundant number of online resources should students find the material challenging. Students can expect a short quiz at the end of the week, covering up to the end of Chapter 10.

ALC1O Grade 9 Art students will begin studying Perspective techniques this week. The short unit will open with an overview of one and two point perspective, a series of drawing exercises, and finish with a street scene similar to the one above. Students will need a sharp pencil and a ruler.

ENG2P Grade 10 English will take some time to focus on the development of literacy skills in preparation for this Spring’s Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test . Most students have completed an initial assessment and there is much work to be done with this class. Students also need to complete outstanding Short Story unit work. A quiz will be completed in class this week, too.

Here’s hoping the warm weather stays a bit longer. Have a great week!

This Week… Cookies and #ENG3U, Short Stories, and More Art Fun!

Last week, my Grade 11 English class asked to do something different on Friday, and I agreed with their suggestion: make some chocolate chip cookies. I was so impressed with the level of communication and teamwork shown by students. To cap things off, students shared what were described as the “best cookies ever” with other staff and students in the school. Here are some pictures:

This week, ENG3U Grade 11 English will begin studying the novel Frankenstein. It’s a challenging novel and hopefully students will make connections with the novel. There are a variety of resources online for the novel to  help students build an understanding of what’s going on.

In ALC1O Grade 9 Art students will spend time creating a project demonstrating their understanding of the various elements of art. The project is similar to this:

AVI2O - LGSS - Intro Design

Finally, in ENG2P Grade 10 English students will continue working with short stories. The class will be spending some time in the computer lab working on a Spontaneous Short Story assignment. September is quickly coming to an end. Most students are caught up but there are some in the class who are already falling behind. Make sure to see me if you need extra help.

Hope everyone has a great week! Remember: Friday is a PD Day!
